Following the successful launch of the new BanaBay brand of bananas in the UK, managing director Mark O’Sullivan reports strong growth within the first quarter of the year.
“We have seen weekly imports increase by 150% since the beginning of the year,” he confirms. “That is equivalent to 300,000 extra bananas a week, which is fantastic news for a brand new to the market. Within the last few weeks alone we have opened three new UK accounts, with more coming on stream, and we have also started shipping green bananas into Europe.”
The high quality fruit, which is shipped by part owners of BanaBay Logistic Partners, from extensive, well-established plantations in Ecuador, has proved a hit particularly with wholesalers, who appreciate the flexible service and competitive prices.
Although the general trend for bananas has been disappointing so far this year, BanaBay is bucking the trend, Mark says.
“We ripen our bananas to the precise condition required by our customers,” he explains. “When shipping into Rotterdam for distribution across Europe, we supply green bananas, but here in the UK, we ensure the fruit reaches its destination at just the right point of ripeness to maximise shelf life and returns. As a result, we’re fast gaining a reputation for reliable supply and outstanding service as well as excellent product quality. As newcomers into the market, we’re determined to make a difference, and so far increased demand for BanaBay bananas and our impressive rate of growth speaks for itself!”
